I started Honor and Daring a year ago because I felt that our civilization was approaching a crisis. I wanted to sound the alarm so that we could prepare. Now there is a way to take our preparation to the next level.
The Obvious Problem
To traditional men and women, the problem is obvious. We have a culture that is becoming more anti-Christian by the day. The economy is stacked against the middle class and set up to benefit the wealthy globalists. Globalization has enriched certain countries, like China, but eroded the wealth of others, like the US. Unchecked third world immigration is lowering the standard of living of developed nations. And when the immigration involves Muslims, it opens up a whole host of other problems including terrorism, rape, and intolerance toward anything Western.
All of these are bad things, but the worst part is that we are becoming aware that our democratically elected governments are not going to do anything to solve these problems. On the contrary, they are working against their own citizens. It was Chancellor Angela Merkel who was responsible for importing hundreds of thousands of Muslim “refugees” and economic migrants from Africa. President Obama and Principled Conservative™ Paul Ryan have been complicit in increasing the same migrant flow to the US.
And don’t think those elected officials are going to do anything but exacerbate the slide into degeneracy. Although the Republican Party has voiced token opposition to such things as same-sex marriage, abortion, and special rights for transsexuals, in practice they do nothing to stop these policies.
But what can we do to bring back a healthy, traditional society?
Our current condition did not come upon us suddenly. The seeds of the disorder are visible as early as the 1500s in the writings of English philosopher Francis Bacon. There have been several gifted men who saw the problem and proposed ways to return to order.
Way back in 1924, French intellectual René Guénon already recognized that the Enlightenment had undermined traditional civilization in Europe. He suggested that the best way of restoring traditional society would be for the Church, last remaining traditional institution, to experience a restoration. Guénon posited that an organized “intellectual elect” would have to emerge to guide this process.
For Guénon, this intellectual elite would not be so much a warrior caste as it would be an order of highly spiritual men who possessed a deep understanding of Catholic doctrine. This group would have an almost priestly character.
Joseph de Maistre
Joseph de Maistre was a nobleman, political philosopher, lawyer, and diplomat who wrote extensively in defense of traditional hierarchical society. He argued that the restoration of the monarchy would not take the form of a popular movement, but would be the result of the actions of a handful of people.
When men form theories about counter-revolution, they too often make the mistake of arguing as if this counter-revolution should and could be only the result of some popular deliberation. The people are afraid, it is said; the people want, the people will never consent, it is not agreeable to the people, and so on. It is a pity, but the people count for nothing in revolutions, or at least they play a part only as a passive instrument. Perhaps four or five people will give France a king…. If the monarchy is restored, the people will no more decree its restoration than they decreed its downfall or the establishment of the revolutionary government. (Considerations on France).
St. Josemaría Escrivá
The founder of Opus Dei had some very helpful ideas about how Christian men could proceed to change the culture. Like Guénon and de Maistre, St. Josemaría recognized that a few men can change the whole course of history.
In The Way, he recommended an approach that countered the work of the Masons:
Leaders!… Strengthen your will so that God can make a leader of you. — Consider the tactics of those infamous secret societies. They don’t try to win over the masses. In their dens they form a number of demon-men who set to work stirring up the multitudes to madness, so that they will follow them to the precipice of all excess… and to hell. They spread an accursed seed.
If you wish, you will spread God’s word, which is a thousand times blessed and can never fail. If you are generous…, if you respond, with your personal sanctification you will help to bring about the sanctification of others; the kingdom of Christ: omnes cum Petro ad Jesum per Mariam — ‘all with Peter to Jesus through Mary.’ (The Way, 833)
Just as the Masons infiltrated organizations to bring about their downfall, St. Josemaria envisioned that a group of organized Christians could “infiltrate” every area of life today to restore order:
A secret, an open secret: these world crises are crises of saints. God wants a handful of men ‘of his own’ in every human activity. And then… ‘pax Christi in regno Christi–the peace of Christ in the kingdom of Christ’. (The Way, 301)
The Baron Julius Evola was an Italian philosopher who wrote during the middle of the 20th Century. Evola also desired a return to traditional society, but he felt that the old aristocracy no longer served as a fitting vehicle for this purpose. Instead, he suggested that a militaristic Männerbund would need to be formed to restore civilization.
For Evola, the Männerbund would be something like a chivalric order of celibate men. This order would form the core of the new aristocracy. Although, Evola conceived of this order being primarily spiritual, he unfortunately rejected Christianity as the foundation of it. Still, while his conception had flaws, Evola was certainly correct in stating that the masculine leadership of a few men would be necessary to bring about a return to traditional society.
What these approaches have in common
These are all different approaches, yet they have a few things in common:
- The return to tradition will not be the result of a mass movement, but the work of a few dedicated men.
- The movement will be primarily spiritual. It will be dependent on God.
- The movement must be organized and guided by a strategy.
- The movement must be fraternal. Members must be committed to their brothers.
- The members of the movement must possess a deep knowledge of doctrine and an equally deep connection to the Divine.
- The members will have an intimate knowledge of past traditional cultures, both Christian and pagan.
- The members will possess a unity of life. The weak and dual-minded will not have the strength to effect the change.
- The culture must be transformed first.
Today, there is no movement that fits all of these criteria but there are many groups forming that are attempting to play a role in shaping the future. Most of these will fall by the wayside, but there will also be some that will be chosen to blaze the trail.
Invitation to Order of the Dragon
When I started this blog, my intention was to form one of these groups. I’m pleased to announce that a Facebook group called Order of the Dragon has been formed by Joseph Kane that shares the same vision.
At present, the group has nearly 100 members. Most of the members are Catholic but there are also several Orthodox Christians. Many of the members have real military experience, which is a big plus. It is open to all serious Christian men of good will.
To become effective, the group will eventually have to evolve beyond Facebook into real space. It will have to implement standards and become more organized. But for the time being, the Order of the Dragon shows real promise.
If you are interested in joining the Order, use the Contact Form to send me a message. Make the subject “Dragon” and provide me with your Facebook contact information. For example,
Also, tell me a little bit about why you would like to join the Order.
After that, accept my Facebook friend request and I will get you added to the Order.
Although I would never reveal your contact information, the members of the Order will obviously be able to see who you are on Facebook. The Order of the Dragon is a closed Facebook group.
At present, joining the Order does not involve any commitments apart from keeping the activities and members of the Order confidential. The Order is not involved in any illegal activities. You can request to be dropped from the Order at any time.
